Trust in local round of Co-op Local Community Fund

Rotherham United Community Sports Trust are part of the first round of Co-op’s Local Community Fund, which is their way of giving back to our millions of members and their communities – providing funding to local causes that our members care about.

1% of what Co-op members spend on their home brand products, and carrier bag sales goes to the Local Community Fund, with over £4 Million already raised towards 4000 projects in the UK.

RUCST would like to run weekly coffee afternoon for older people that benefits their mental, physical health and social health. We are targeting a particular area, where the Rotherham Coop Funeral Care is on Doncaster Road. We will work with older people who are isolated and living alone or in sheltered housing in the Clifton, East Dene and Springwell Garden area and bring them to weekly activities at New York Stadium in town centre.

The sessions will be delivered in the health space at the AESSEAL New York Stadium which can be utilised and get older people physically active playing table tennis, bocce and Kurlin, indoor games, nutrition advice as well as arts and craft.

The sessions will reduce social isolation older people face, and get them meeting other people and developing new friendships. The sessions will be delivered by our health staff.

Jamie Noble, Head of Community said “The Local Community Fund is a fantastic scheme which offers local charities an opportunity to deliver important engagement projects to the local community, the work we do supports all characteristics of the local community and our aging population is one which we thrive on supporting. Coffee mornings are a great way to bring people together to allow them to socialise on a regular basis but also be physically and mentally active”.
